studio teacher: At Work

Pre-Primary through Pre-Kindergarten with transition at Kindergarten

· Meet with each EEC class once per day

· Music - once per week

· Movement - once per week

· Art - once per week

· Project Work - twice per week

· Open Studio times - early morning, late afternoon

· Kindergarten meet twice? per week (more or less depending on schedule)

· Music - once per week

· Art/Project Work - once per week

· Document children’s work done during studio times through photographs, video, artifacts, written accounts

· Work with teachers to support project work by acting as a resource for new ideas, suggestions, and materials

· Assist with classroom documentation

· Work with small/whole groups in the atelier, classrooms, or outdoor spaces

· Create displays of EEC/K studio and project work for Library, Atrium, other places on campus

· Collect and maintain an archive of documentation and artifacts

· Collaborate with fine arts teachers across campus - art, music, drama, dance, writing. Also, phys ed.

· Bring in field experts, artists, musicians to perform, work with the children throughout the year

· Organize special programs - Special Friends Day, Father’s Morning, End of the Year

· Maintain stock of supplies, materials, and equipment in the studio, make orders when needed

· Collect and organize natural materials, found objects and recyclables

· Maintain Ashley Hall website as the studio teacher

Nothing Without Joy

When children are able to

draw

dance

pretend

sculpt

sing,

these actions become outward expressions of their THOUGHTS and the process of making sense of the world around them.

Making these experiences more meaningful and complex requires ample opportunities

to try,

to explore,

and to practice.

My goal is to create an environment for our children where they can become FLUENT in using the arts as a language for expressing what they know, what they are presently learning, and what they would like to know. The studio experience would equip the children with the confidence to use the arts as tools to make meaningful connections with core academic skills.

Spaces

The atelier needn't be an actual space. The atelier is a state of mind!

Even though the current atelier is quite small, there are many unique, beautiful spaces around campus to utilize in new, inventive ways. Think of the possibilities...

And of course, working in the classroom is a great way to maximize time spent working in the space where children are already naturally thinking of their project work. Use of a rolling cart can bring necessary materials and equipment directly to the classroom with ease.
